……………………..Philosophy

Creating comfortable areas that function well for tasks, hobbies, entertaining and relaxing in your home is a basic consideration.  But beyond that, my goal is to create an environment that contributes to your emotional well-being and that expresses who you are.

With the pace of life these days, most clients want to come home to rooms that are cozy or calming.  Some of you enjoy a sense of whimsy.  Many want rooms you can be proud to entertain in  —  but that also feel comfortable when you’re home alone.

……………………………..Form Follows Feeling

There’s an old saying in the interior design field:  ‘Form follows function.’  In addition to the functional aspect of your furnishings, it’s important to look at their form from another angle:   Consider the mood you want to create and look at the specific shape and line of the furniture you’re considering – not just it’s style ‘label.’

For instance, would you enjoy a tailored feeling in your dining room or prefer a more cozy setting?  The first preference would call for a rectangular or square table, while the second would benefit from the selection of a round or oval table.

My design philosophy is:  Form follows function — and feeling.

…………………………………………………………………………Color Evokes Emotion

Scale, balance, shape, line, texture, pattern, lighting and color are all elements that can be utilized to create the desired mood.  But the single most powerful element is color.  The most effective way to harness color’s power is to move beyond choosing  fabrics, wall colors and area rugs just because they appeal to you.  It’s best if you also choose colors with an eye to the emotional mood they will create.

A key element that’s often not consciously considered is choosing the correct undertone for a color.  Although some have a knack for this, I’ve found most clients need help here.

Background

My original career interest was in the creative concept and graphic design aspects of advertising.  That led me to attend CSU San Jose’s advertising program, where I received a B.A. degree.

While growing up, I was fascinated by fabric patterns and color.  As I found myself drawn once again towards that interest a few years after college, I accepted an offer to become a designer specializing in custom window treatments.   Before launching Custom Creations in 2004, my interior design experience includes working as a designer for an independent window coverings retailer to working as a custom window coverings design specialist for Macy’s and Breuner’s.

At this point, I have over 24 years of experience in this field.  Originally, I specialized in custom window treatments.  But over time, I’ve broadened the scope of services I offer, as most clients prefer the convenience of having a single designer at the helm of their project.

……………………………….Community Involvement………………………………

The causes I support all focus on the well-being and education of children in our community:

American Association of University Women:   This  group has been a strong advocate for girls and women since 1881.  The Oakland-Piedmont branch serves the community with an annual Tech Trek scholarship (to a week-long  STEM summer camp) for middle-school girls and  an annual Summer Camps & Programs Virtual Fair, now in it’s 35rd year.  The group also works in the library with students at MLK Elementary School once a week.

Children’s Support League:  This group produces a fabulous home design tour every spring in April, The Heart of the Home Tour.   Over the past 27 years, more than $3.2 million has been awarded to local foundations helping children in Alameda & Contra Costa counties.

Volunteering for Oakland:  The first Volunteer Fair for Oakland Students & Youth was created by this group in order to make it easy for volunteers to find a way to help local school children.  As a founding member of this Fair,  I’m pleased to say it’s become an annual event each September and is now in its 8th year.
