Design Philosophy

Form Follows Feeling

There’s an old saying in the interior design field:  ‘Form follows function.’   My goal is to go beyond that to create an environment that contributes to your emotional well-being.

With the pace of life these days, most of us want to come home to rooms that  feel cozy or calm us, or that are fun or have a sense of whimsy about them.

My design philosophy is:  Form follows function and feeling.

Color Evokes Emotion

Scale, balance, shape, texture, pattern, lighting and color are all elements that can be manipulated to create the desired mood.

But the single most powerful element is color.  More than any other element, color evokes emotion.    The most effective way to harness the power of color is to move beyond choosing fabrics and wall colors merely because they will be pleasing to live with.

In addition, it’s best to also choose color with an eye to the emotional mood it will create.   This in turn, means going beyond the emotional connotations generally associated with specific colors.  A key element that’s often overlooked is choosing the correct undertone for each color.

The rich blue and brown colors create a calming environment for a baby boy's bedroom.

It’s Now Easy to Be Green

I’ve always been able to recommend the best window treatment options for your home’s energy efficiency.

But it’s now becoming much easier for you to ‘go green’ when it comes to fabrics and furnishings for your home.

Design Background & Experience

As an adult,  my original career interest was in the creative concept and graphic design aspects of  advertising.  That led me to attend San Jose State University’s advertising program, where I received a B.A. degree.

While growing up, I was fascinated by fabric patterns and color and found myself drawn once again towards that interest as an adult.  So I decided to become a designer specializing in custom window treatments and upholstered furnishings.

My interior design experience ranges from working as a designer for an independent window coverings retailer to working as a custom window coverings design specialist for Macy’s and Breuner’s.

Custom Creations was launched in 2004.  At this point, I have over 22 years of experience in this field.
